What could the future of Uptown be like?
What could the future of Uptown be like?
Imagine if 550+ of Aotearoa's University students were all presented the challenge of dreaming up what the future of Uptown could be? Well, in semester one of 2023, that's exactly what's happening.
The Uptown Business Association, alongside local business The Urban Advisory, have partnered with the University of Auckland, Unitec and AUT to reimagine our neighbourhood and create visions of it's potential. This means students currently studying architecture, landscape architecture & urban design across all year levels will be using areas and aspects of Uptown as their case study for 8 semester one papers.
With over 100,000sqm of land to be redeveloped around the new Maungawhau Train Station, the growth in commuter and visitor numbers will bring even more buzz and diversity to the Uptown precinct. This is why we've engaged over 550 incredibly bright minds, to assist in dreaming up possibilities of making the future of Uptown the best it can be.

With this many students eager to learn more about what’s going on in Uptown from a ‘real world’ perspective, we'll be partnering them with local businesses who are keen to assist with their knowledge, recourses and time.
The project/collaboration will culminate in a multi-day showcase of selected students work, with discussions and presentations mid-July. This festival will invite people from all walks of life across Tāmaki Makaurau to imagine and visualise the future of the district.
If you are an Uptown business who would like to get involved, please reach out by emailing rachel@uptown.co.nz
That's 550+ University students,
dreaming big about the future of Uptown
We want the future of Uptown to be planned with the community
- including the local businesses - right from the start.
This is why we've been working so closely with the Universities and will continue to do so: in briefing them, partnering students with local businesses and engaging with the courses right throughout the semester. Alongside The Urban Advisory, a handbook has been created based on the findings from our community engagement work. To read the full handbook, click the link below.
