Coffee Fanatics

Words: Rachel Hamilton

Modicum

Customer: Richie Nieper

Your go-to:

Marocchino, served in a small glass. Jenny introduced me to it and she does it so well, I always get it.

Why Modicum Cafe?

I tell all my friends that the best café in town is Modicum. I love the regular clientele; it’s kind-of like a bar, in the way that I know most of the staff and customers. Modicum has a really friendly, familiar feel of community. And the food is amazing of course.

What do you love about coffee?

I drink a lot of coffee, but what I love
the most is the social aspect; the ritual of sitting around having a chat about life. I love the way coffee compliments food or a pastry, but the general togetherness that coffee brings is the biggest aspect.

Fount Coffee Co.

Customer: Bradden du Jary

Your go-to:

Depends what time of day, but it’s either a flat white or a batch brew.

Why Fount Coffee Co.?

Obviously I love the coffee, but [founders] Nate and Evan are also awesome. I get stuck there having a great chat, as they’re always up for a yarn! Their batch brew is amazing, which is why I get it from them; they roast their own beans especially

for it. I look for stuff like this when I go to a café, and have been going since they opened. I also order beans from them.

What do you love about coffee?

The flavours! It’s like if you’re into craft beer or particular wines, you don’t just drink whatever. It’s about that next step you take and for me, coffee is the same kind of vibe. I really love the different variations and roasts.

Coffee Pen

Customer: Ben Lawson

Your go-to:

Flat white. Or if it’s my second or third one for the day, it’s a long black.

Why Coffee Pen?

I go to Coffee Pen because the coffee
is amazing and the staff and community they’ve created is too. All the staff are so friendly and it has a super-familiar, very humble, really nice vibe. They also start getting my coffee ready as soon they see me coming!

What do you love about coffee?

I love the ritual of it; it’s how I start the day and then I’m ready to go. It’s always the first thing I think of in the morning and once I’ve had it I feel like I can start my day properly. It’s very comforting. I drink so much coffee it doesn’t really affect me anymore, so it’s definitely more about the ritual.

Twenty Three

Customer: Kate Rodger

Your go-to:

Flat white, double shot.

Why Twenty Three?

I’ve worked around the corner at Three for 17 years, and I’ve been coming to Twenty Three for as long as it’s been open. I come here for the people; Twenty Three feels like a home away from home. Emma is such a great personality and I’ve gotten to know her well. The staff she hires are lovely, chatty, genuine, authentic and an absolute reflection of Emma. And, of course, I come for the fact that their coffee is outstanding!

What do you love about coffee?

Coffee is a social reason to come out for me, a reason to switch off and feel good. It’s less about the coffee and more about the well-being of it. Coming to the cafe is a huge part of that, as Emma can tell when I’m stressed and having a bad day just with one look. Since the lockdown, I’ve especially loved coming back for that sense of community and caring from everyone.
