Magma Mural erupts in Uptown
At the heart of Uptown, at the Symonds Street car park, you’ll discover the Uptown “Magma Mural”. Over 500 sq. metres of a water reservoir’s blank concrete wall was transformed into a vibrant, attractive space.
The work was designed by renowned New Zealand artist Sara Hughes and conceptualises the volcanic landscape of Auckland. The initiative was recognised internationally at the 2018 International Downtown awards. It was awarded a Certificate of Merit in the Public Space. This category features capital improvements that have enhanced the urban design, transportation methods, physical function, or economic viability of downtown and the community.
Since being painted the Magma Mural has become an attraction for public use as a backdrop in wedding photos, fashion photo shoots, ‘selfies’ and even as the cover photo on a popular magazine.
