Meet your Neighbour, & Flowers

We welcome “& Flowers" to the Uptown neighbourhood

This week, we caught up with owner Nimna to hear about her journey and what inspired her to permanently set up in Uptown.

Walk into &Flowers on Mount Eden Road, and you’ll feel it instantly. The space is deeply personal, echoing owner Nimna’s world. From her parents’ wedding photos on the walls to the custom furniture she and her partner built by hand, the space is bespoke.

So here's what you might not know about Uptown’s new florist.

Growing up her career path felt predefined. “Traditionally from a south Asian background it’s - doctor, lawyer, or engineer.” Following that expectation, Nimna studied biomedical science.

But creativity had always been part of her life. “I’ve loved art for as long as I can remember,”

Shortly after finishing her degree, she went back to complete a master's in design. Truly following her passion and using her strong artistic eye.

While looking for full-time employment, living with her sister and niece, she found unexpected inspiration. Each day they would go for walks and return home with flowers.

“I remember thinking — it would be cool to be around flowers all day.”

So she started her arranging journey “I thought, I’ll just make a few bouquets for my friends and see how I do.”

What began as a small experiment quickly grew into something bigger. Nimna began listing arrangements on Facebook Marketplace, and the business slowly took shape. “I guess it happened without me even realising.”

Last year, after outgrowing her apartment workspace, Nimna opened a small pop-up store just two doors down from her current store. The response from the neighbourhood was overwhelming.

“There's a lot of people in the neighbourhood who were like ‘you should stay’ and they kept buying flowers from me because they were like ‘it would be so nice if you stayed’”

Today, &Flowers has found its permanent home in Uptown.

The shop itself is more than just your regular florist. Nimna has been working hard to create a space where people can slow down, connect and learn — using her affordable flower-arranging workshops to build a community here in Uptown.

And when Nimna is not in the store, you can find her back at the University of Auckland campus, this time teaching design.

When Dining Out Became an Occasion in Auckland

Long before Auckland became a city of casual dining and shared plates, there was El Matador. Perched on Symonds Street Uptown, from the late 1950s through the 1970s, the restaurant occupies a fond place in the city’s collective memory—a time when dining out was rare, glamorous, and memorably theatrical.

El Matador was one of only a handful of fully licensed restaurants in central Auckland during the 1960s, and that alone made it special. To step inside was to enter a more sophisticated world. Guests climbed a staircase into softly lit dining rooms, greeted by uniformed waitstaff and the hum of conversation that signalled an evening out was underway. This was not somewhere you wandered into on impulse; you dressed up, booked ahead, and treated the night as an event.

The menu reflected mid‑century New Zealand aspirations toward European dining. Steaks, schnitzels, seafood and the much‑remembered crayfish mornay sat alongside classics like “chicken in a basket,” a dish recalled by many as their first ever restaurant meal. Wine choices—Chianti, Blue Nun, Montana Pearl—were part of the ritual, as exotic then as the idea of eating out itself. It was a busy establishment, averaging 3600 meals a month.

El Matador drew couples on dates, families celebrating milestones, nurses from the hospital pooling pay packets, and young Aucklanders tasting independence for the first time. It became woven into personal histories: engagements, birthdays, first paydays, first tastes of restaurant life. Done up in red-and-black décor with dim lighting, it featured live music every night. Beyond the food and service, the opportunity to “Dine and Dance” was an attraction.

It was owned by the very charming Ladislav (Lada) Ourednik. He was of Czechoslovakian descent, escaping the territory by hanging onto the undercarriage of a train to join the French Foreign Legion. Luckily for the New Zealand hospitality industry, Lada immigrated here and eventually owned seven restaurants in the city off the success of El Matador.

By the late 1970s, changing liquor laws and a rapidly expanding dining scene made places like El Matador less unique, and it eventually closed its doors. El Matador is part of hospitality industry folklore, remembered fondly as a place identified with a formative era—when Auckland was learning how to dine out and doing so with unmistakable style.

El Matador was situated on Symonds Street, diagonally across the road from the Edinburgh Castle pub.

Meet your Neighbour, Pizza Kai

We welcome “Pizza Kai" to the Uptown neighbourhood

This week, we caught up with owner Simon Sun to hear about his journey and what inspired him to open in Uptown.

Simon studied cookery in Auckland before working his way up to a head chef role. After co-owning a café with a friend, he began reflecting on what he truly wanted to create for himself.

“Over time, I started asking myself what kind of place I would want to run if I opened my own shop one day. I didn’t want to create something flashy or overly commercial. I wanted a space that felt steady and friendly, somewhere people would feel comfortable returning to.”

Having previously worked in a senior role at a pizza chain in New Zealand, opening a pizza shop felt like the natural next step.

Uptown stood out immediately.

“Uptown made sense practically. There are offices, schools and residential buildings all around, so the customer base felt naturally diverse, from students to families to people working nearby. It felt like a place where a small local pizza shop could quietly fit in.”

But beyond the location, it’s the people who have made the biggest impression. Simon and manager Ruby both spoke warmly about the support they’ve received from neighbouring businesses.

“Everyone around us has been so kind.” With Hero For Sales on one side and IFix just down the road, they’ve already made fast friends.

“They would come over, introduce themselves, share their own experiences, and offer advice. As someone who is quite introverted, that meant a lot to me. It didn’t feel like I was opening a shop alone, it felt like I was becoming part of a community.”

Although they’ve only just opened, Simon already has a clear vision for the future.“My goal isn’t to be the biggest shop, but to be a place people feel at ease coming back to.”

In the short term, that means investing in more equipment to expand the menu with sides and continuing to refine the space. Long term, Simon hopes to introduce meal options and set menus suited to different groups, students, families, and late-shift workers alike. “I hope that anyone nearby can walk in freely and find something they feel like eating.”

Basque Park Summer Series Returns This February with a Latin Celebration

Basque Park Summer Series is back on 21 February, this time serving up a vibrant celebration of Auckland’s Latin community.

Uptown, we’re doing it again.

On 21 February, Basque Park Summer Series returns, this time bringing Auckland’s Latin community to the heart of our neighbourhood.

Set within Basque Park’s natural amphitheatre, expect live salsa music, energetic performances, dance workshops, and a buzzing market atmosphere.

Curated by Anya Vitali of Cross Street Festival in collaboration with Viva Dance, the program delivers a vibrant line-up designed to invite participation and celebrate the colour, rhythm, and joy of Latin culture. With live Latin music playing throughout the day and dance lessons open to all, come along and give it a go.

If the music isn’t enough to tempt you, look out for the ‘Latinas’ offering free food tastings from our food vendors across the park. From 12–1pm, it’s your chance to try something new and discover your next favourite bite.

As with previous events in the series, you’ll also be able to browse local market stalls and meet volunteers from a range of community organisations, learning more about the causes and initiatives shaping Uptown.

Bring your whānau, bring your friends, and settle in for a vibrant summer day in the park.

Basque Park is easily accessible from Newton Road, Symonds Street, New North Road, and Ian McKinnon Drive. We encourage everyone to walk, bus, or scooter where possible.

Exmouth Street is the best drop-off point for Uber and mobility access, with Rendall Place leading directly to the park’s concrete pathways.

 We welcome “Madam Rat" to the Uptown neighbourhood

Uptown caught up with Cindy Chen, owner of Madame Rat. Known for her beautifully curated dried florals and thoughtful homewares, Madam Rat brings a calm, considered presence to the area.

Founded by Cindy Chen, Madam Rat began as a passion project. While searching for dried flowers to decorate her home, Cindy quickly realised they were surprisingly hard to come by.

“At the time dried floral wasn't so much a ‘thing’ and they were hard to find. So my partner and I started exploring the possibility of drying our own flowers and doing our own arrangements. This quickly became a new passion and we thought why not try and turn something we love into a business?”

While floristry was a new direction, Cindy brings a wealth of experience from an unexpected background. She holds a Pharmacy degree from the University of Auckland and spent nearly a decade working in pharmaceutical manufacturing. Alongside this, years in retail and community pharmacy helped shape her strengths in operations, customer care, and relationship-building.

After outgrowing their previous Ponsonby space, Uptown felt like the right next step. The new location offered the larger footprint they were looking for, while still keeping them close to familiar surroundings.

Cindy’s first home was just a five-minute walk from the current store. Making the move feel like a return to a well-loved neighbourhood. So far, the transition has been a positive one.

“We're loving it! It's changed a bit from when we lived here 10 years ago, but for the better! I'm definitely enjoying all the lovely little cafes and eateries around here. Everyone's been extremely friendly and welcoming, we're so glad we chose to move here.”

Now with more space, Madam Rat is looking ahead to continue growing. “We're really excited about meeting new customers and building up an extended clientele in Uptown. Long term wise we're just hoping to continue growing our business now that we have the space to do so, especially with the likes of weddings which require a lot more space.”

Uptown Locals Bring Summer Vibes to the December launch of the Basque Park Summer Series

On Saturday, locals and visitors came together for a sun-soaked, laid-back afternoon filled with music, markets, performances, workshops, and plenty of good vibes.

The day marked the first event in the Basque Park Summer Series , brought to life by Uptown business Anya Vitali Creative Services and local Celia Ruane , whose passion for community and creativity transformed the park into a lively hub for connection and fun.

From the natural amphitheatre to the winding paths and shady trees, Basque Park came alive with neighbours, furry friends, and whānau enjoying the eclectic mix of performances and activities.

Summer is just beginning and we can’t wait to see everyone back at Basque Park for the next events - so grab your picnic blanket, bring your whānau, and soak up the Uptown vibes!

From December 13th, Basque Park will host a new summer community event series. The park’s natural amphitheatre, shady trees, sculptures, seating, and pathways make it the perfect Uptown location for people to gather, relax, and connect.

After years of nearby construction, this is a chance to celebrate the creativity and diversity that make Uptown special.

Bring your family and friends for a relaxed day out with live music, markets, performances, food, and workshops. You can also meet volunteers from a range of local non-profits and learn something new about the various causes in your community.

Programming is by Anya Vitali from Cross Street Festival with support from Eliette's Music Academy, ensuring a great line-up of musicians and DJs, and performers across the December, February, and March events.

The series is supported by the Uptown Business Association and will feature both a group marquee of local creators and individual business stalls.

Giant volcanic mural “Magma 2” completed in Uptown

Originally created by renowned New Zealand artist Sara Hughes in 2017, Magma referenced a ‘volcanic scape’, abstract in form yet influenced by the history and geography of the area. Now, as we welcome in 2025, Magma 2 continues that legacy, bringing fresh energy and vibrancy to the Uptown precinct.

“It's been an exciting opportunity for me to create a new artwork for this site, completed on the 17th January 2025 after an intense 10 days of painting, much of it up a scissor lift to reach the top of the 8 metre high wall.

“The new artwork titled Magma 2, is also based on what lies below the earth's surface, the bubbling molten rock, containing suspended crystals and volcanic gases. Maungawhau/Mt Eden a reminder of what is below our feet can be seen from the site.

“I wanted to capture the movement and power of this invisible force, ever present deep down yet not something we think about as we go about our daily life.

“The wall is made from an extremely rough concrete, which is why I decided to apply the paint using an airless sprayer. I love how the lumpy concrete catches the spray, for those walking past and viewing the artwork up close you will see many veiled layers of paint.

“I worked with 3 assistants who supported me to paint this vast 512sqm mural, as one of the largest murals in the country, it was great to have their help.

“I received many positive comments from people passing by and by those who live in the area when I was painting, lots of people told me how happy they are that the mural is being recreated and how much better the area looks.

Brent Kennedy, Uptown Business Association manager says,

“The first edition of Magma transformed a bleak grey space into a vivid landmark that became synonymous with Uptown.

“While it symbolised an expression of the creativity that can be found in the community, the imagery provides a link to Maungawhau on the horizon, the maunga that overlooks our precinct.

“Magma 2 reinforces the space with a new expression of the same theme. People who are familiar with the original work are sure to be delighted to see new life given to an iconic work of public art.

“We thank Sara Hughes for her talent and passion in creating the work.”

A celebration of spring in Uptown!

On the morning of Saturday 12 October, Nikau Street in Uptown came alive with spring time performances and fun for the third annual “Branch Out” festival.

Circus performers roved the streets, and festival-goers enjoyed business activations, sampling local food, trawling for vintage finds, playing giant games, and more. Kids were busy creating crafts and chalk art on the street.

Music filled the air at the main stage, which included a full-day lineup of performances from incredible local talent.

The Uptown business and arts community offered something for everyone, creating an upbeat, positive vibe.

Thank you to the Uptown businesses and artists who came together to make the day a success. Thanks to the Uptowners and Aucklanders who came out to join in with the fun. A special thanks to Link Alliance, the Uptown Business Association’s partner in producing this event.

Mark your calendar for Saturday 12 October, 2024

Nikau Street in Uptown will be in full bloom with music, performances and market stalls from 9 am - 3 pm on Saturday 12 October.

The road will be closed to make way for a main stage area for the free street festival, attracting people from around Auckland to relish some springtime music, performances and fun.

The main stage acts include popular trio Albi and the Wolves, duo Aro, singer-songwriter Emily Bateman and DJ Russ B closes the day. The day kicks off with performances from Eliettes Music School and the Dalmatian Orchestra.

Performances include circus acts, clowns from Cirque du sol Little, and street theatre by famed Insecurity Guards who promise to dispose of your insecurities by the end of the day.

A dedicated children’s zone will keep the kids entertained with arts and crafts and a host of market stalls and demonstrations including kites by Uptown institution Kiteworks, skateboard demos by Cheapskates, giant games, a chalk zone and comics from Heroes for Sale will also keep kids entertained.

There’s vintage shopping to be had with Good Stuff bringing a haul of goodies to trawl through. Get your hands dirty by giving the pottery wheel a whirl or bag a bargain from any of the market stalls selling their wares.

Food is on the menu too with treats from Mibo, excellent coffee from twiice in their edible cups and for something more substantial try the barbeque from Delicisimo Deli or Ziggle’s delicious chicken treats.

Cafe Twenty Three will also be part of the entertainment with music in the courtyard, alongside their usual good coffee, lunch offerings and treats – and the Corner Store will open at noon for refreshments.

The day is designed by Uptown Business Association and Link Alliance, which is building the City Rail Link and is the key partner for the event.

Meet Your Neighbour, The Fitness Portal

We welcome “The Fitness Portal” to the Uptown neighbourhood.

Uptown catches up with co-owner and creative director Taylor Blackler to hear about The Fitness Portal, a brand new gym in the space that was previously home to BodyTech.

The Fitness Portal had their start in 2019, and not long after expanded to a second Wellington location. From there, things really took off. Taylor was planning to head across the ditch, when The Fitness Portal team presented him with the opportunity to expand up to Auckland. We’re pleased to announce that they’ve found their first Auckland home in Uptown!

Taylor merges his skills in fitness, marketing and content creation, and a long-time dream of owning a gym, to create a community at Fitness Portal.

As you walk in, you’ll be greeted by staff who are creating a friendly, supportive and motivational environment. Inspired by facilities seen overseas, Fitness Portal has a health club feel, offering lots and catering to many, all under one roof.

The gym floor feels non-commercial, with everything you need as well as unique pieces of equipment for hard training. The facilities also include a swimming pool and spa, as well as sauna, steam room and ice bath. Group fitness and personal training are also on offer.

Portal Cafe, located just inside the gym entryway, is worth a visit on its own. Already known among Uptown locals, cafe owner Azumi serves great coffee, smoothies, toasties and pastries. “Azumi came to us with her idea to start a cafe inside Fitness Portal, and it was pretty much a no brainer!” says Taylor.

The construction of the space was informed by their vision and business model:

“The vision of Fitness Portal is to create a space that everyone feels welcome in, and can progress whatever their fitness goal is.”

“We cater to everyone,” says Taylor. From casual gym goers wanting an attractive space to stay active, to powerlifters and bodybuilders wanting hard training.

There’s a challenge in creating a space that works for everyone, but The Fitness Portal has struck a great balance.

“The member’s experience is so important to us, whether you are a 16 year old kid wanting to learn how to train, or a 55 year old wanting to come for a swim and a coffee and a walk on the treadmill. We have very high standards across the board. That’s how we operate.”

Taylor cites the membership and staff base as The Fitness Portal’s biggest success so far. “The people have been great. The staff have been our backbone. We’re very lucky,” he says. Members who come from surrounding offices and apartments love the convenience, as do those who make the most of Uptown’s connected position and travel from the surrounding CBD and Newmarket areas.

Spring, community, creativity and collaboration;
Branch Out Festival 2023 was a success!

On Saturday morning over the weekend, Nikau Street in Uptown was humming with festivities for 2023's "Branch Out - Uptown Spring Festival"!

Live art was happening, activations engaged with, giant games were played, delicious local food was devoured, friends gathered for photos at the free photo-booth, and kids created chalk art on the street to their hearts content.

The Uptown business and arts community had something for everyone; the atmosphere was positive, relaxed and joyful.

The programme was jam packed, and included outstanding musical performances from local talent and circus performances amid a full day entertainment line-up.

Thanks to all the businesses who participated, the community who came out in force, and a special thanks to our partners in putting on this event, Link Alliance.

The Link Alliance and Uptown Business Association have teamed up once more to present “Branch Out Festival”; a free community event celebrating spring, the arts, local businesses and the vibrant city neighbourhood on the rise of Uptown, which will be home to the newly developed Maungawhau Station.

Just down from the top of Mt Eden Road, between The Corner Store and Al Volo Pizza, lies Nikau Street, which will be transformed from 9am - 1pm on Saturday October 7 into a street festival with markets, live music, food, fashion, crafts for kids and lots more.

Among the local businesses at Branch Out Festival will be Goodlids, Floralcentric, Isle of Eden, Sabato, twiice, Al Volo Pizza, Mibo, Goatloft, Hard To Find Books, House of Knives, Ratbags Store, Ziggle, Twenty Three Cafe, For The Love Of Bees, the Studio Art Collective and more. A mixture of demonstrations, tastings, activities, workshops, and products for sale will be on offer from each of the Uptown businesses at the festival; there’ll be lots to get involved with!

Set up near the end of Nikau Street, overlooking the impressive CRL development of the new Maungawhau Railway Station will be the main stage, featuring performances from local talents including Starjam, Flip n Fly Circus School, Eliette’s Music Academy, and the Dalmatian Cultural Society.

Uptown is a vibrant, innovative and attractive urban place, and will be transformed in the next three years with the new and developed train station. Link Alliance Development and Response Manager Piet Ubels says they are looking forward to highlighting some of the amazing businesses, services and local talents surrounding the future Maungawhau Station, on a street overlooking the development.

“Branch Out Festival is a great opportunity to celebrate on a street that will become transformed by Maungawhau Station,” says Piet. “Nikau Street is set to become a significant pedestrian thoroughfare between the station and central Uptown, and we’re proud to be working with the Uptown Business Association again to create an opportunity for the neighbourhood - and the wider Auckland region - to come together and discover what’s here.”

This year will be the second Branch Out Festival to take place, following the successful community event run in 2022 which brought over 1000 people out into the Normanby Road area to celebrate spring together.

“Uptown is a place of discovery, creativity, diversity and inclusion,” says Uptown Business Association Event Coordinator, Rachel Hamilton. “There are so many passionate, talented and welcoming locals living and running businesses here. Last year was so much fun, and we can’t wait to showcase the vibe of the precinct once again; helping people to “branch out” and discover something new.”

The 2023 Uptown Futures Festival was a huge success

The Uptown Futures Festival has come to a close, after a successful week of inspiration, conversations, meeting new neighbours, and amazing collaborations; all centred around showcasing some of the incredible student work from AUT, Unitec and the University of Auckland.

Alongside local business The Urban Advisory, Uptown has had over 550 students from 1st year right through to Masters, reimagining our neighbourhood and creating visions of its potential. The festival showcased a selection of these projects, to act as a catalyst for community input into the development of the area.

Student Showcases popped-up in Uptown at Kāhui St David's, Brothers Beer & Juke Joint BBQ, and 1 Mt Eden Road. We also hosted four events across the duration of the festival.

Thank you again to our sponsors for their support in bringing this festival to life! And thank you to everyone who stopped in to say hi, attended an event, engaged in the festival and contributed your thoughts and ideas. It's an exciting time to be living and working in Uptown.

Meet Your Neighbour, Ziggle

We welcome "Ziggle" to the Uptown neighbourhood. Known for its ridiculously good chicken, Ziggle's menu is packed with traditional Korean Fried Chicken in a range of flavours.

The name Ziggle refers to a Korean word for the sizzling sound you hear when receiving delicious dishes straight from the kitchen.

Childhood friends Chris and Min started Ziggle as a food truck five years ago. After growing up together in the Auckland area and serving fried chicken at night markets across the city, they opened their flagship store on Karangahape Road. As you walk in, you’ll experience a classic diner feel and be greeted by one of their small team, a close knit group made up of friends and former colleagues.

“After opening our flagship store, we were able to build up our brand and reputation through food delivery. This gave us the opportunity to open several physical locations. Uptown is our fourth shop.”

Led by general manager and chef Ray, Ziggle’s menu is made for chicken lovers, with a fusion of Western and Korean elements. You’ll find a range of Korean fried chicken, which can be enjoyed on its own or stuffed in a burger. You’ll also find classic beef burgers, loaded fries and a range of delicious sides.

“We wanted to keep the menu simple and our prices reasonable so everyone can have the opportunity to enjoy Ziggle.”

Uptowners may have noticed the installation of their vibrant blue signage in their new space at the top of Mount Eden road. We spotted Blink Ltd., the same team who work with us on our Uptown magazine completing the fit out last week. Small world! Ziggle love their spot in Uptown, saying “our new space also has a great large shop front, which means we’ve had space to increase our street presence.”

“Ziggle Uptown is like the heart of our Auckland stores. It really joins us together, with our Panmure and Henderson stores to the east and west and our Karangahape Road store just down the road. We also love the heritage feel of the area.”

Uptown radiated love last Saturday!

On Saturday over last weekend, the Uptown stretch of Mount Eden Road was radiating aroha and positive vibes in the neighbourhood!

Live music was being played, flower crown workshops happening, dogs posing for portraits, delicious food samples offers everywhere, games and activities being enjoyed, and free tuk tuk rides taking people up and down Mount Eden Road to explore more of Uptown.

We're grateful to have had this window of opportunity to gather together before the storm hit. We hope you've all weathered the cyclone as well as could be, and our hearts go out to the Uptown community as we all navigate this
latest weather event.

Matthew Prasad - Principal Urban Designer, The Urban Advisory: Matt's firm Holistic Urban Environments recently joined forces with The Urban Advisory, bringing Matt's experience in creating beautiful, innovative Human Environments. Matt has sought-after expertise in bridging the divide between the realities of urban development, complex institutional needs, architectural flair, and best practice urban design and community building.

Kent Lundberg - Technical Director, MRCagney: One of the leading walking and cycling experts in Auckland, Kent has over twenty years' experience working in urban planning, landscape architecture, and real estate services. Kent has particular expertise in liveable street design, public transport integration, cycleway planning and design and has worked on several town centre redevelopment projects.

Deborah Levy - Head of Property Department, University of Auckland: Deborah has significant experience working in property and research, has been head of the University's property department since 2008 and is also Associate Dean of External Enagement. Deborah is leading Town Centre research at the University and is an expert in property decision making.

Kamelia Haydon - Development Manager, Kāinga Ora: Kamelia is an urban designer with fifteen years’ experience in the industry and qualifications in architecture and urban design. Her project experience is based predominantly in Auckland and Melbourne and it includes large-scale public projects delivered with in partnership with international practices such as Auckland’s City Rail Link and Arts Centre Melbourne. Having worked on the regeneration of Glen Innes, Mt Roskill and Mangere she has learnt that community, local understanding and forward planning are essential to placemaking.

Uptown was alive over the weekend, for Branch Out Festival

On Saturday over the weekend, the Normanby Road & Enfield Street area of Uptown was buzzing, alive with new flavours, activities and experiences!

Dogs were posing for portraits, delicious food tastings were everywhere, live art was happening, hotdogs were flying off the stand, and games were being played all day. The atmosphere was vibrant, positive and fun.

An incredible 234 people completed the word search, where they visited all 10 participating businesses to find the hidden letter.

The Future of Housing in Uptown - After 5 Event

Uptown was thrilled to finally get to host The Future of Housing in Uptown event last night, after months of postponement due to covid restrictions. Hosted in the beautiful space of The Mind Lab , we heard from three passionate and innovative speakers leading the change in ways of living.

Dr Natalie Allen from The Urban Advisory set the scene by highlighting the potential for new solutions for living in Uptown, after which we heard from Blair & Julie McKinnon who with 26 Aroha have created a "sustainable, affordable and joyful new way to live". Jade Kake, director of Matakohe Architecture + Urbanism closed the evening by discussing using a kaupapa Māori approach to urban design and architecture, and what this can enable.

Uptown is proud to have celebrated NZ Music Month with their annual showcase, Local Voices

The Horse & Trap was buzzing on a Thursday night, with Uptown locals filling the The Stables;
the downstairs event space at the popular bar.

Uptown has a great history of music; with The Powerstation, Bungalow Bills, The 13th Floor and Roundhead Studios being just some of the music spaces that help make Uptown the awesome creative community that it is. The business association was thrilled to celebrate NZ Music Month and continue the area's legacy of creativity.

Four spectacular bands performed on the night, kicking off with the Eliette's Music Academy All-Star Band; a group made up of teachers from the local music school. They paid tribute to a host of New Zealand's music legends, playing covers of popular kiwi classics in the spirit of NZ Music Month. Indie-rock band Bridges performed next, with a set of dramatic originals written by the Uptown Business Association's very own Rachel Hamilton.

The Parussini & Barrand Project blew the crowd away with their saxophone lead quintet, performing stunningly tight and creative arrangements of jazz standards. To finish the night, it was Big Tasty; a 9-piece funk band who bought the house down.

Eco Festival - Uptown talks to Lightforce

On Wednesday 30th March, Uptown had the privilege of talking to Uptown-based business Lightforce,
in an online event for the community.

In nine years, Lightforce has grown from an innovative start-up, to providing 20% of New Zealand's solar installs.

In a mission to become the nation's largest rooftop generator, Lightforce believe that good energy can help thriving communities.

In this exciting Q&A, Russell Brown talked to founder and CEO Luke Nutting, where he discussed the development of the business and the compelling options that solar energy brings. Kat Rundle talked about how Lightforce’s commitment to community has provided tangible benefits and a lighter, brighter future to many.

Meet Your Neighbour, Eliette's Music Academy

Brand new to the Uptown community is Eliette’s Music Academy. A playing-based school, the Academy specialises in applying musical skill to a group setting and encouraging the creation of original music.

With 14 purpose-built, individually sound-proofed practice rooms, the music academy sits above The Persian Rug Gallery on the corner of Khyber Pass and Auburn Street. In just 6 years, their Albany location has grown to be teaching an impressive 450 students, ranging in genres from classical and jazz, to rock and pop.

At the helm of the Uptown location is Nick Douch. A seasoned professional musician and drummer for 10 years in the successful kiwi rock band Ekko Park, Nick has played hundreds of shows throughout Australasia, the UK and Europe. His love of supporting young musicians in their own musical journeys brought him to Eliette’s Music Academy, where he is now a business partner with Eliette (Founder), and Director of the new Uptown campus.

As well as teaching all ages at their two locations, Eliette and Nick recognise the value of music in supporting young people and their mental health, which is why the Green Room Charitable Trust has been established. Taking the programme direct to schools across Auckland, the programme gives youth struggling with anxiety, depression and bullying the opportunity to express themselves through music.

When it came to choosing a location for the second site of the Academy, Uptown was the perfect spot.

“We wanted to be somewhere central, close to schools and to public transport”, explained Nick. “Having looked at buildings for a couple of months, we were blown away when we found this space. The stylish and innovative “Isle of Eden” has moved into the Uptown neighbourhood. Focused on sustainability,

affordability and quality, these sunglasses are some of the best on the planet you’ll be able to find.

Nelson Rayner started Isle of Eden four years ago in London, after dreaming of creating his own sunglasses business for more than a decade. With their first baby on the way, Nelson and his partner Felina Natoli moved back to Aotearoa to start their family and the new business.

It was an interest in 90’s hip hop and rap music, with their big Versace glasses, that kicked off Nelson’s fascination with sunglasses. However, with the monopoly from big businesses resulting in an overpriced, unsustainable industry, Nelson’s interest in sunglasses grew into a small business with a different way of doing things.

Each pair is designed by Nelson himself, with every aspect of production and materials from start to finish, executed with the environment in mind. The handmade sunnies are crafted out of a biodegradable material, with lenses that are perfectly designed for Aotearoa’s uniquely strong rays of sun. For people wanting to upcycle their Isle of Eden sunglasses, they can take them into the shop, buy a new pair with a 30% discount, and Nelson will reuse parts of the old sunnies in a new pair.

And the sustainability doesn’t stop there. Every piece of plastic involved in samples, shipping and packaging is recycled and turned into fence posts by Isle of Eden’s partner Future Post. Isle of Eden is also partnered with charitable organisation Sustainable Coastlines, running a programme in which profits from each pair of sunglasses sold go towards a massive beach clean up effort.

When it came to finding their first physical shop location, the decision to move into the Uptown area came down to a combination of things.

“I like that Uptown is such a unique area; it’s definitely on the rise. I’d rather be a part of an area that’s poised for growth than somewhere already established. Price was another big factor; it’s an area that’s affordable for a small business, like us, to get their footing.”

Meet Mark Derby: Author of ‘Rock College: An unofficial history of Mount Eden Prison’

Uptown was the place to be on Tuesday night, hosting renowned author Mark Derby as he shared his wealth of knowledge of the history of Mount Eden Prison – an iconic place located right here in Uptown.

Grim, Victorian, and notorious for 150 years, the night was full of stories; of the history of the prison, of the people behind the walls, the conditions they lived in, Aotearoa’s past and present penal system, and the future of the towering building that remains.

Mark drew from the knowledge presented in his recent book: ‘Rock College: An unofficial history of Mount Eden Prison’. As former Mount Eden inmate James “Diamond Jim” Shepard said, “if you want to know what it’s like inside that place, this book is the next best thing to a ten-year stretch.”

The local community in attendance enjoyed free nibbles and drinks, the opportunity to meet Uptown neighbours, as well chat with Mark Derby. A few even came away with signed copies of his book!

Uptown Local Voices – Celebrating NZ Music Month 2021

Uptown has a great history of music; with The Powerstation, Bungalow Bills and Roundhead Studios being just some of the music spaces that help make Uptown the awesome creative community that it is.

In April, we searched the community for musical talent, and are proud to have presented the very first ‘Local Voices’ event; a showcase of some of Uptown’s spectacular local musicians!

Held the Horse & Trap, downstairs in The Stables, Montgomery kicked off the night with his 5-piece band and new wave sound centered around his love for alt-rock. Our local multi-instrumentalist Kingsley Spargo followed, with his smooth and soulful trumpet, vocals and guitar. Up and coming band The Furr Coats bought the energy with their bluesey indie-rock sound, and Alícía closed off the night by wowing the audience with her impressive R&B, Jazz and Hip-hop influenced beats, performing with her tight 4-piece band.

It was a beautiful Sunday to celebrate Aroha in Uptown, for 2021’s Valentine’s Day.

The Uptown Business Association partnered with Link Alliance and the City Rail Link to bring this event to life, and it was a stunning afternoon celebrating love in all its forms in our neighbourhood!

People shared the love with free Ceroc dance classes run by Bliss Dance Studio at the Horse & Trap, made Seedloveballs at OMG, and took their pets for a portrait at Brothers Beer Juke Joint.

An abundance of live music filled the air with Pacific Elvis serenading passers-by on Symonds Street, acoustic music at The Corner Store, Eden Bistro, Brothers Beer Juke Joint, The Good Home, and DJ’s at Coffee Pen and Fridge & Flagon.

An Artwalk took people to the best art spots in Uptown, including the Art Studio Collective, Jayden Plank’s community mural and Uptown’s brand new mural made of reclaimed wood in a labour of love by Piet Ubels and his father Jan.

On a brilliant sunny Sunday in October, Uptown celebrated Artweek.

Facilitated by the City Rail Link team, it was great afternoon celebrating creativity in the neighbourhood.

People were able to take a self-guided tour checking out live carving, screen printing, painting and tattooing. Many basked in the sun listening to DJ’s at Coffee Pen or took in a little Bluegrass at the Art Studio Collective.

The first of what we hope to see as an annual event in Uptown.
