Snatching time with Common People in Uptown

Words: Suzanne McNamara

Chris King and Sophy Phillips are partners in life and business and with Common People, their hair salon on Symonds Street, they set out to make customers feel like part of an extended family. Chris and Sophy want their clients to feel comfortable and relaxed during haircuts and treatments. Even their ultra-cute terrier Albie, who is often found at the salon, has become part of the Common People experience. Originally from England, Chris has more than 20 years of haircutting experience and he brings this to a one-on-one service, offering private appointments so clients can truly relax.

How does the family affair work?

Between the two of us, we’ve done it all, so to speak. The family dynamic works really well, we work to our strengths and cover each other’s weaknesses.

Why did you choose this location, and has it taken long to build up a clientele?

We’ve been in Uptown for about three years. It’s always been a special place for Chris, so when the opportunity came, we grabbed it. Chris has a very loyal client base, some travel from different cities, even countries for his haircuts. We’ve never really advertised for business, we just believe that if you find yourself at Common People, then you were meant to be here.

What’s hot with hair right now?

You’ll see extremes coming through, that’s all we’re saying.

Are you seeing a trend for embracing the grey?

It comes from a more natural mindset mixed with financial uncertainties from the pandemic. We’ve both always tried to break trends for our clients, otherwise you’d all look the same.

Any tips for looking after your hair in the summertime?

Just be kind, forget about isolating a season, be like it all year. For what your hair gives you in emotional soundness, give it back. Ask Chris in-salon for tricks and hacks he has learned that he’s more than happy to share with clients.

Your favourite one or two hair products, and why?

A diffuser for perfecting curl or to give movement. From a product point of view, a really beautiful oil, as they have so many uses.

What’s the best thing about your job?

The relationships.

What’s the worst thing about your job?

Late nights and weekends away from family.

What tunes are on rotate at Common People?

Anything from 80s pop to indie folk.

And your favourite lunch or coffee spot in Uptown?

Believe it or not, Jimmy at Duchess Bakery on Eden Terrace makes the best coffee around. His Vietnamese coffee is like crack cocaine (not that I’ve tried the latter).
